Women in Leadership: Debunking Myths, Defending Callings by Dr. Eddie J. Fernandes tackles a controversial issue in the Church: Should women be allowed to lead in every Church capacity? A contentious issue, Dr. Fernandes, as the residing senior pastor at Riverside International Church in Cascais, Portugal, for almost 30 years, takes readers on the journey. Delving into the deeper meaning of the Bible, taking a look at long-held traditions, he addresses such issues as the gender role of male and female. Debunking myths while defending women’s callings in leadership is not a theory, but a scriptural explanation that ushers in empowerment of women into their God-given callings and giftings. He boldly proclaims and expresses that everyone has a place at the table in the Kingdom of God. An invigorating read!

With care and compassion, this book springboards from a scriptural foundation that readers will find intriguing. Alongside personal testimonies, his own experiences that he practices within his home and church life, he also includes a Biblical assessment of the scripture verses that have been used as a platform against women serving in leadership. Within that, he explains the true meaning of women in ministry and their role at home, as well. Rather than advocating for debate, he wholeheartedly supports the female role in Church leadership with bold backbone. He leads by example in his own life, as well as in his sphere of influence within the Riverside International Church in Portugal.

This book comes highly recommended for men and women who question the belief that a woman cannot be in a position of leadership within the Church. A section to foster self-esteem and confidence for families raising young women and girls is especially helpful. This is an interactive book with questioneers and time for reflection. It is an exceptional and informative read that takes the understanding of the Scripture, explaining that women should be empowered in their homes, neighborhoods, and churches to flourish and co-labor alongside their male counterparts for the Kingdom’s sake.

A truly enlightening, Biblically balanced, and encouraging read for all asking that controversial question. This is a must-read for all who desire to move forward the Gospel of Christ.
